What is Utilization management? It is the evaluation of the appropriateness, medical need and efficiency of health care services procedures and facilities according to established criteria or guidelines and under the provisions of an applicable health benefits plan. Utilization management describes proactive procedures, including discharge planning, concurrent planning, pre-certification and clinical case appeals. It also covers proactive processes, such as concurrent clinical reviews and peer reviews, as well as appeals introduced by the provider, payer or patient.

All precertification's are reviewed with the oversight of our registered nurses and coordinated with your selected TPA and/or claims adjudicator. Our team of Utilization Management Specialists learn and understand your Summary Plan Description (SPD), and precertification and authorization determinations are based on your Plan Benefits and Exclusions. We also check eligibility data if it is available. Our Utilization Management Specialists encourage members to obtain services from their panel providers. If a member chooses to use a non-panel provider we make every effort to re-direct them into the network. If it is not possible, we will contact the non-panel provider to discuss a rate negotiation resulting in a potential cost savings to the client and the member.
